Types Of Identification for Your Puppy

It is a wise idea to have a minimum of two forms of identification for your new puppy. There are millions of dogs and cats that are euthanized every year in shelters all around the country. Many of these are pets whose owners cannot be found.  Most shelters only hold animals for a short time, so if they are not claimed or adopted, unfortunately they will be euthanized.
Collar with tags 2The most common type of ID is the traditional dog collar. I see many people put dog collars on their dogs, but they do not provide any contact information on the collar if their dog runs away or gets lost. A collar is useless for finding your pet if you provide no information on it. Your dog should have a dog license, name and address ID and his rabies tag attached to his collar. The rabies tag lets the finder know that your dog has been vaccinated for rabies. Many times the rabies tag can be traced back to the Veterinarian who administered the shot, and he in turn, can contact the owner. The dog license tells shelter workers that the dog has been registered with their counties local government.

Collar with plateMany companies sell collars that you can have your information embroidered or stitched onto the collar and they are very reasonably priced. They also have name plates that can be attached. Many times the effort taken to contact the owner depends upon how easy it is to do. Tags should have up to date information that includes the owners name, address and phone number. If there is room on the tag you could also include your veterinarians name and number or an alternate such as a family member.

Unfortunately, collars can come loose or the tags may fall off, so that is why it is a good idea to have a backup method of identification as well.

MicrochipMicrochips-Over the past several years, microchips have grown in popularity. Most scanners are now able to pick up microchips from most companies. The chip is inserted into the back of your pet’s neck. There is no pain involved. The chip is very small, about the size of a grain of rice. Many of the companies that insert the chips also supply the owner with a online service to help locate the pet for a small fee and supply a free tag as well.

TatooTattoos-Tattoos have been used to identify dogs for many years. The tattoo consists of a series of letters and numbers tattooed on the inside of the dogs upper rear leg. The number is then registered with a dog registry or Pet ID company. Some purebred dogs are tattooed and registered with the American Kennel Club. The average person however does not know to look for a tattoo, then find the registry to contact the owner.

By placing identification on your dog you have a much better chance at successfully finding him if he gets lost and goes missing. It is well worth the extra time and effort if it brings your cherished family member back home to you.
